The global E-Learning market is on pace to surpass $300B by 2025, while Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) programs are dying a slow death.

So why are Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) programs so far behind?

If you are in healthcare, or diabetes management specifically, you may have heard that DSME programs are shutting down around the country.

Mainly due to the lack of engagement and attrition rate.

Only 2% of people with diabetes reported completing a Diabetes Self-Management Education Program in 2017 — ADA

To better understand this problem, it may help to understand why e-learning is experiencing so much success.

According to Orbis, the major factors promoting the e-learning market include:

  • Low cost
  • Easy accessibility
  • A shift towards flexible education solutions
  • Increased effectiveness by animated learning
  • Increased internet penetration: (Statistics show that the number of internet users ranges around 3.2 billion, which makes 43 percent of the global population)
  • A surge in the number of smartphones: (currently owned by 36 percent of the world’s population)

The problem with DSME programs?

They do not have any of these major factors.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs require a patient to come into a brick and motor location and sit through a group class or one-on-one teaching session for one or multiple hours, across multiple sessions.

This is a recipe for failure, as we are seeing from the statistics.

DSME programs have been clinically proven to make a significant impact on outcomes. Including reducing the risk of renal failure, loss of vision, neuropathy, and heart disease.

The benefits are clear, but the delivery is out of date.

With the recipe for e-learning success right in front of us, how will Diabetes Self-Management Education programs take advantage?

At KingFit, we believe we have a solution.

Thank you for reading.
