Think about what you are doing, don’t think about the technology. If you are doing that, the technology will become evident. — Dr. Martin Harris, CIO at The Cleveland Clinic

Two years ago when KingFit was transforming from a Digital Diabetes Prevention Program to an automated mobile technology, a wise man from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas gave us some advice. He explained that time and time again, someone would build a new technology without fully understanding the patient, provider and organization.

In healthcare lingo,

Who pays? Who uses? Who benefits?

Who Pays

In healthcare, the patient rarely pays for the service she or he receives. Providers bill insurance, and the patient’s insurance picks up the tab. You have most likely experienced this transaction. Health plans are the most common payer for healthcare services today, although in some cases an organization like a hospital system or physician owned clinic will play the role.

Who Uses

The user of the technology may vary. An Electronic Medical Record (EMR) has a different user than an Artificial Pancreas. In our situation, the user is the patient. Specifically, a patient diagnosed with diabetes.

Who Benefits

Entrepreneurs like to say that everyone benefits. Healthcare executives prefer more specifics. This is where validation comes into play. Does it keep patients healthy? How does it improve efficiency while lowering costs? Does it require less people? How will it effect the bottom line?

Although these questions are a generic starting point, they have proven valuable in our experience with large partners.

Delivering Value to Everyone

Sharing an experience with 100+ digital health startups via Startup Health has opened our eyes to true value. We are able to observe examples on both ends of the spectrum.

We are delivering value to the patient by creating access to education from Certified Diabetes Educators. Our content will help the patient feel more confident in managing their diabetes and it will inspire the patient to take action.

We deliver value to the providers by helping deliver better care to their patients with diabetes. The provider will benefit from more referrals and a higher star rating. Eventually, sharing in the savings created from their healthier patients.

Finally, we leverage the significant research done on Diabetes Self-Management Education to display value to the decision makers/payers. Engagement with Diabetes Self-Management Education has been clinically proven to reduce A1C levels → which reduces risk for renal failure, loss of vision, and neuropathy → which reduces costs.

And…we have a thesis.

Establishing Case Studies

“Workflow!” Dr. Martin Harris’ answer was simple when asked what comes after understanding value at every level. Dr. Martin stated that most new technologies will be an addition to existing protocols. It is important to know how the new technology will fit into the existing system. You only find and/or present that answer through case studies.

“Workflow, workflow, workflow.” — Dr. Martin Harris, CIO at Cleveland Clinic

This is the stage we are experiencing at KingFit. We have established pilot studies with Via Christi, MD HomeCare, and two other organizations that will be revealed in Q2 of this year. Our goal now is to show improved patient efficiency, increased patient engagement with DSME, ease of use, and high provider satisfaction across multiple clinical workflows.

We will prove that we are the best accessory for diabetes education available in the world today.

A Question of Innovation

In Peter Thiel’s book Zero to One, he explains that true innovation must create something completely new or be 10x better than an existing solution. As entrepreneurs in healthcare there is a lot of opportunity to do something 10x better. We believe we are doing that for diabetes education and we hope we are inspiring others to step onto the battlefield.

This is the biggest change that has happened to healthcare in 100 years. — CEO at The Cleveland Clinic
